Surf Shack Chic

Santa Monica, California

Situated a mile away from Santa Monica’s sandy beaches, this airy seaside residence combines a minimal color palette with durable furnishings, and cohesive layout that maximizes hosting in a smaller space.

The Need

This client was looking for assistance in making their first rental apartment functional, and aesthetically pleasing while utilizing pieces they already owned while making their home feel cohesive. They came to MLB Designs for full service design looking for guidance on how to spend their tight budget for impactful results.

The Challenge

This project took place in a property that the client was renting. Rental properties offer a unique opportunity to think of creative ways to customize a space with temporary solutions. This client needed ways to maximize gear storage, hide electronics when not in use, and create space for numerous guests when entertaining.

The Solution

Bockwoldt brought in a mix of high and low priced items to stay within budget. Bockwoldt used wall space as a way to display surfboards to blend functional storage and art. Budget friendly drapery was added to the main living space to add hide speakers, soften lighting, and provide privacy from neighbors.

DIY Elements

Lighting:

Lighting can easily transform a space by providing a unique visual element and creating a moody environment. This specific project offered a plethora of opportunities to bring in creative lighting choices, due to a minimal amount of built in electrical. Bockwoldt opted for a white oak, unstained pendant with black exposed plug in cord. Paired with an oversized 5 inch clear glass bulb, this one of a kind pendant light illuminates the space.

Window Treatments:

These handmade canvas, leather, and brass window treatments tie in natural material to the space in an impactful way. By simply removing the old dated sliding blinds, these roman shade inspired window treatments provide function and form to both the hallway and kitchen spaces.
