Website Re-Design
Pepperdine University is a private research college located in Malibu California. The university is comprised of an undergraduate liberal arts school, Seaver College, and four graduate schools: the Caruso School of Law, the Graduate School of Education and Psychology, the Graziadio Business School, and the School of Public Policy.
Role: Lead UX/UI Designer
The Need
Ensure the website design and layout was up-to-date to provide assurance that Pepperdine is on top of latest trends and technologies. Provide smooth customer experience across platforms. Improve SEO. Optimize page load speed. Improve UX/UI design. Ensure site is WCAG 2.1 AA compliant.
The Challenge
Develop a new design layout that optimizes mobile first responsive design, capitalizing on screen real estate. Retain a clean flat design approach while reducing visual clutter. Revise brand color palette for accessibility. Update all images and ensure correct sizing for web. Implement standard icon library to improve technical site load problems.
The Solution
Using a combination of analytics, heat mapping, click tracking, and best practices, the website redesign features a layout that best fits the feedback received during discovery and build out. The designs take usability, design, function, and a mobile-first approach based off data-driven research.
Design Elements
Photography: New impact images were selected based off heat mapping analytics. Photography features bright and airy style photos focusing on the human experience. All images were resized for web to increase page render time.
Color palette: Additional secondary colors were thoughtfully selected, and added to official brand color palette.
Iconography: The website redesign propelled the establishment of selecting and implementing a standard icon library. This icon library is consistently used across all marketing platforms. Increased use of icons provided quicker page load time, stronger user recognition, and increased visual communications.

Mobile Design
A mobile app has the advantage of gaining immediate attention from an individual. The Pepperdine mobile app assists students with campus activities/events, critical education updates, and advising reminders and class updates. The main objective for Pepperdine University’s mobile app redesign was to refresh the UI to align with the colors and iconography of the Pepperdine website refresh. Design for this project was limited within the constraints of the mobile app software MODO Labs. And is currently undergoing a full UX/UI transformation in 2022.
